Valentine

valentine 4

Jason Wu for Target top (old), Jason Wu for Target skirt (old, similar here), Ann Marino shoes via DSW, Vintage Pearls (similar here), Kate Spade ring (old, similar here)

I don’t get to wear this skirt nearly as much as I’d like to, which is sad. I have relatively few pleated skirts and dresses, and I love their swishy silhouette and the romantic vibe they lend to an outfit when paired with a delicate blouse. I particularly like to pair it with this blouse and a strand of pearls for a feminine (and Valentine’s day appropriate) outfit. I may not have any special place to wear this today (I already celebrated the holiday with brunch this past Sunday – outfit pictures to come), but it’s fun to play dress up some days anyway.

Currently Obsessed With: Hearts

With Valentine’s Day tomorrow, it seems appropriate to be seeing hearts everywhere (like in yesterday’s post). Unfortunately, the hearts I tend to see in the apparel department tend to be too kitschy or young-looking, but in honor of Valentine’s Day, I was able to find quite a few heart-bedecked pieces I’d gladly wear on the 14th (along with a gift for your iPhone).

Heart Cookies

heart cookies 1It’s been a long time since I last made sugar cookies. I have the same aversions to making them as everyone else does: while the dough is easy to make, it takes nearly forever to roll them all out, cut them into pretty shapes and then bake them, not to mention frost and decorate each individual cookie (a step that’s not necessary, but let’s face it – who wants to eat a plain sugar cookie? No one.). Since I’ve been making cupcakes pretty much nonstop in recent times, I thought it was time for a change of pace, and Valentine’s Day was the perfect excuse to make a batch of seasonal cookies. Plus, I really wanted to try my hand at royal icing (and, having no meringue powder, used this recipe which substitutes pasteurized egg whites instead – for the record, 3 oz egg whites is equivalent to 3 large egg whites). Spreading the frosting evenly wasn’t as easy as I anticipated, but a butter knife solved the problem nicely. While sugar cookies aren’t something I’m going to make all the time, they were definitely a nice treat.

Burgundy Stripes

Forever 21 Top (similar here), Forever 21 Jacket (nearly identical here), NY&Co Jeans (similar here), Steve Madden Boots, Vintage Necklace (similar here)

I, like many others, have an obsession with stripes (my preference being black/navy and white horizontal ones). Luckily for my wallet, I’m usually able to convince myself out of buying more by reminding myself that I already have three other navy-and-white striped tops. But, when I ran across this one back in December, it was a different story. For one, these stripes were vertical – something I don’t often run across, but have always loved – and second, they’re burgundy (if you’ve been reading for a while, you know burgundy is by far my favorite color for fall), giving me enough reasons to buy it.

Showcase: Prabal Gurung for Target

prabal gurung for target

I always anticipate the arrival of the next Target designer collaboration – I truly think they get better every time. This one is no exception. The pieces are inspired by love, so says the designer. There’s a wide variety of colors, patterns, and styles, and yet it all comes together to form a gorgeous, cohesive collection that’s totally crush-worthy. Above are my favorite looks and pieces from the collection (you can see more here in the Target Lookbook) – you can find the items in store and online starting this Sunday.
