Keep Calm and Carry On

I just realized on Friday that I haven’t posted in almost a month. Wow. I really, truly cannot believe how fast that time has passed. The past four weeks have been a huge, stressful whirlwind of stuff. Everything was happening all at once, and I didn’t have enough time to do all of the things that I really had to do, let alone the things I wanted to do – like blog.

This past week, frankly, was pretty torturous. But the silver lining is that things are slowing down now, Stress is fading, I’ve got fewer things to do, and more time to go back to doing the things I love (which, at the moment, is sleeping in and relaxing). I’m keeping calm (and carrying on), taking each day as it comes and not worrying about the future.

During all that stress and mania, I felt like I lost touch with myself. I pretty much kept my head down and powered through, and that really wiped me out. I didn’t feel like myself.

And then I realized that I haven’t really been being myself for a while now, cheesy as that sounds. So I’ve been relaxing and focusing on regaining a sense of self, and I’m feeling a lot better.

And, on Friday, I came back here to sarah kate style. I started playing around with headers and links and CSS, which I really kind of love, and it reminded me how much I love blogging. (You may have noticed the new header and altered navigation bar.) So I began whipping up a ton of posts that will start appearing on Monday.

At the moment, though, I’m really, really looking forward to my trip to the UK this summer. In just a little over a month, I’ll start packing up all of my necessities for two weeks abroad. I’ll be spending my birthday there, too, and I’m planning on a twilight dinner cruise on the Thames – so I’m really starting to dream of the view above.

I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

Life Lately

{Insanely gorgeous weather calls for a midi skirt (similar here), vintage crop top and metallic platforms}

I’ve had a really nice, low-key week. Besides Tuesday being incredibly rainy, the rest of the week has felt a little more like spring than past days this month, and I love it. I’ve already broken out my sandals and skirts, gone on my annual antiquing trip with a friend, and since I’m in the spring cleaning state of mind, I’ve started planning an exciting new renovation project that I’ll share next week. But for right now, I’m cooking – a lot. I made a pretty huge (but simple) brunch (recipes to come next week) that was a total success, and now I’m working on an Easter feast for tomorrow. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Easy Bruschetta

bruschetta10

This past weekend, my best friend and I went on our annual spring vintage shopping trip. There’s a street not too far away from either of us that’s packed with tiny antique stores and has a smattering of cafés and bistros to boot. On various separate occasions, I’ve eaten at a tiny restaurant on the same street, and it’s my absolute favorite place for Italian food. And the day we went, they had a table set up outside with free samples of bruschetta. There are no words to describe how good it was – honestly, I didn’t know bruschetta could be that fantastic. So naturally, I tried to recreate it the next day. What I came up with (recipe here) is pretty spectacular, I have to say – it’s light, fresh, and a breeze to make – but it certainly won’t stop me from going back to that restaurant.

My 10 Favorite Beauty Products

beautyfavorites

I’ve been wanting to write this post for a while now, but I never really felt qualified. But, in the past year or so, I’ve been buying more beauty products, experimenting, researching, and coming up with a few that I really love. It may change and evolve over time, but right now, here’s what made the cut:

Josie Maran Argan Oil Light: I bought the light version for one reason or another, and I seriously love it. It absorbs pretty quickly and makes my skin feel really good…I don’t know how else to describe it. I’m sure you’ve heard all the hype about argan oil (and face oils in general), and I totally get it. (Also, TBD says to put it on after your regular moisturizer to lock in moisture – I really feel like it makes a difference.)

Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture: This has been my go-to for years. Right now I’m alternating this with Clinique, and that may end up winning me over, but I really do like this one. Clean, light, quick-absorbing, no residue, and it gets the job done.

Smashbox Photo Finish Primer: I think this was one of the first significant higher-end (read: non-drugstore) products I bought. I was hearing a lot of hype about it, but the price scared me. What if I don’t like it? What if it doesn’t do anything? And then I bought it, used it, and totally understood why women are willing to pay a lot for beauty products: they work, and they make a difference. I’ve never tried another primer but I don’t see why I’d ever have to – this one smooths out my skin so well, and everything else just glides on over it.

Clinique Clarifying Lotion: A recent purchase, and I’m really liking it. It’s essentially a toner, and I like it a lot better than my previous one (it felt really harsh, which I assumed was how it was supposed to feel). It’s gentle and makes my skin feel clean and smooth…for my nighttime routine, I stick to a swipe of this, moisturizer, then argan oil.

L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara: I have pretty long eyelashes to begin with, so I’ve never been extremely attached to any one mascara – I always felt like I was getting the same results with each one. I first read about this one in Lucky right after it came out, and Jean Godfrey-June gave it such a rave review that I figured I’d give it a try. And it’s easily one of the best mascaras I’ve ever used. I love the brush, the formula, and the fact that it doesn’t flake off (as a contact wearer, I’m constantly struggling with little clumps of dried mascara that attach themselves to my lenses, so this is a big one for me).

Sephora Collection Nano Eyeliner: As someone who wears eyeliner religiously, I have pretty strong opinions about which ones I like and which ones I don’t. Though I always like to try new ones, this small pencil from Sephora is one I turn to time after time. It’s cheap and comes in a ton of colors, so I don’t feel bad experimenting with electric blue or emerald green (and the short stick means very little commitment). But if I’m looking for something classic, I stick to Midnight Black and Gri Gri.

Benefit Posietint: I usually don’t wear blush. I feel as though I’ll put on too much and look feverish, plus I have the tendency to blush a lot anyway. But I got this cheek stain in a sample pack a while back and it’s currently the only blush I use. It melts into your skin and provides a sheer, light pink wash of color – and, as a bonus, it doubles as a lip stain.

Essie Nail Polish: Nail polish is a given, and my go-to is Essie. It’s hard for me to pick a favorite shade, but the two colors I always reach for are Mint Candy Apple and Tart Deco.

Fresh Sugar Lip Balm: This is, without a shadow of a doubt, my favorite lip balm. I’m not even sure what makes it so good, besides the fact that it really moisturizes. The tube feels glamorous, the balm isn’t sticky or heavy, and it smells faintly citrusy. Now that I’ve used up my first tube, I’m tempted by the tinted versions…

Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb: Given that perfume is so expensive, I normally like to buy rollerballs of scents I want to try (they’re pretty cheap and easy to throw in a purse). I have three perfumes I stick to – Daisy Eau So Fresh and Live Colorfully for day, Angel for night and special occasions – but when I first smelled Flowerbomb, I was hooked. If the name isn’t intriguing enough, it smells delicate and flowery as much as it does rich from the patchouli (and, at least on me, I get a hint of vanilla).

Wednesday Wish List

wed_wishlist_6

1: Apparently I have a thing for zebras on shirts. I got a sweater from Zara months ago (last seen here) with a huge zebra on the front, and now there’s this crop top…I think it’s pretty weird. And I love it.

2: I love skirts. I always have. But up until recent times, they were all short (read: knee-length and above). That all changed when I got my first maxi skirt last summer. And then came the midi skirt, which for whatever reason I thought would be horribly unflattering. so I took the plunge, bought one, and was obsessed. And I found this one not too long ago, and I think I need it, even though it’s seriously over-the-top girly.

3: Oh, Zara, you really can do no wrong. I’ve been secretly obsessed with the Birkenstock dorky-chic trend since it started…but they’re kind of expensive, and I’m a little scared I won’t be into it anymore once I get a pair. These are even better, in their price and everything else. Basically Birkenstocks, but with less buckles. Minimalist. Shiny. Pink. That’s what I’m all about.

4: I thought I’d get over the whole statement earring thing. I thought I’d be convinced out of hoarding them for one reason or another – the earlobe pain they inflict, the usually astronomically high prices, the need to wear simple clothes with them so you don’t look totally gaudy and/or crazy. And I’ve gotten over all of that (and have also embraced wearing statement earrings with everything). I just bought these. And these. And these navy ones would just look too good with spring pastels…I might just have to get them.

5: I seem to gravitate towards clutches. And the minaudiére is the queen of clutches. Sure, it’s probably the least practical form of purse ever, but they’re just too cute. (And like I said above, Zara really can do no wrong. Black and white? Geometric? Leather? Yeah. I want it.)
