Work Tips

I’d be perfectly happy if I could spend all of my time reading books outside in the sun, cooking, and shopping online, but sadly, those things don’t accomplish much other than amusing me. But only recently have I come up with a routine that makes doing work – dare I say it – kind of enjoyable. I do a lot of work at home, so it’s easy to get distracted or lose motivation. So today, I thought I’d share my six tips for getting work done and staying motivated.

1// Create a Work Space: If you’re working at home, it’s definitely tempting to camp out on the sofa with your laptop (and maybe a bag of pretzels…), but it’s way better to work at a desk or table. Make a work space – I have an office, but it can be as simple as a desk or table in a quiet space. Whatever the case, make it a clean, distraction-free space that you love – my office is filled with white lacquer furniture and bright red accessories – but make it a designated work area. If you spend extra time there, it stops being a serious place to do work (and you might as well just stay on the couch). And if you make it a clean, pretty and inspiring place, you’ll actually want to go there – it’s like tricking yourself into doing work.

2// Hydrate: It’s easy to get bored when you’re doing work. Sometimes I eat when I’m bored, convinced that if I’m munching on a pretzel (pretzels are totally my weakness) I’ll be able to focus on doing work. But instead of consuming all those extra calories, I’ll keep a glass of ice cold water on my desk (you can substitute tea, coffee, or whatever else you like). It gives my mouth something to do, keeps me feeling refreshed, and helps me achieve my goal of staying hydrated.

3// Keep a Notepad Handy: A lot of times when I’m working, lots of miscellaneous things pop into my head and have the potential to distract me. That’s what I should write a blog post about! I need to find a new quinoa recipe. I should see if that one skirt from Zara is still available. Instead of acting on the thought, I keep a small notepad nearby to jot things down – it ensures that I’ll remember them for later, but helps me keep my mind focused on the task at hand.

4// White Noise: Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t work effectively in total silence. No matter what I’m doing, I always have to have some kind of background noise. I remembered reading about Coffitivity awhile ago, and started using it this week. I love it. It totally feels like you’re in Starbucks, and it’s just enough noise to keep that catchy song from running through your head and driving you crazy.

5// Keep Your Space Well-Lit: This one really goes without saying. It’s hard to stay positive in a dark area, and letting lots of light in – be it natural or artificial – keeps you motivated, happy and awake.

6// Know When to Take A Break: If you feel yourself getting burned out, take a break – step outside, do some lunges, pet your dog, grab a snack – do something to rejuvenate yourself. But don’t make it too long, or else you’ll lose all motivation and it’ll be really hard to get back to work.

Fall Fashion

It may be the middle of summer, but I’ve already started refreshing my fall wardrobe. While I love breezy striped tops and neon accessories, there’s something about fall fashion that makes my heart beat a little faster – the rich colors, the luxurious textures, the ease and comfort of layers. My style tends to change season to season: feminine and a little preppy in the spring and summer, minimalist and edgy in the fall and winter. I always get sucked into the trap of looking for clothes I want for the next season, and this year is no exception. I started my search with the Zara sale (one of my favorite times of year) and moved on to H&M (in all honesty, those are the two stores I shop at the most). Above are the things currently in my shopping carts, and the items I’ve already purchased for the coming season.

Two Years

happybirthday

Two years. It’s amazing to me how fast the time seems to go. And yet, I recently looked back at some of my first posts in hopes of becoming inspired to work hard on this blog again, and I thought: wow, have I changed. It’s inexplicable. I remembered how I felt when I wrote each and every post, and even more clearly I remember how I felt in the spaces in between. Stress. Falling outs with friends. Relationships. Happiness, adventure, excitement. It all seems like it happened just moments ago, but when I look at where I am now, it couldn’t feel further away from the present.

I started sarah kate style just four days after my birthday, so the blog’s anniversary has always been a time for me to reflect on the past year and see how far I’ve come, how much I’ve grown and changed. I feel really good about where I am right now. I haven’t felt this good in a while. It most definitely has to do with the weather (sunshine makes me feel alive like nothing else). And on my recent vacation, I met some amazing people and saw and did and learned so many amazing things. I feel so immensely inspired right now, and I can’t wait to channel that into this blog. I feel different, and it’s a really good different. Life feels different in other places and I want to hold on to that for as long as I can.

On the day I flew back home, I woke up knowing that I need to change little things in my life. I made a list of the things I hope to do, to better myself and my world, and have slowly started to cross items off. I began with the hardest one – apologizing. I’ve never said it on this blog: I don’t admit defeat. I don’t admit I was wrong, or that I did anything out of place. It’s a character flaw and it’s one that I can’t change easily. But something inside me snapped, and told me that I couldn’t live with holding grudges against people. It’s not healthy. It doesn’t feel good. And I lost some of the people I was closest to. So I said I was sorry, and left it at that. It is slow to rebuild things from rubble, but you have to start sometime. And I think it will be worth it in the end.

It feels a little out of place to be writing all of this on here, but my heart feels so full that I can’t help but want to share my joy with you, with anyone who reads this. Life is constantly moving and changing and evolving, so there’s no guarantee that I’ll feel this content for long, or that I’ll even feel this way next week. But I’m not going to spend precious time worrying about the future.

I mentioned back in this post  how 2014 is my year of taking chances. That was put on pause after a few things didn’t quite work out the way I wanted them to, but I’ve begun to unintentionally realize that goal again. So my advice is this: do something that scares you. It doesn’t have to be big, but just try something that you wouldn’t have otherwise done. Maybe it will pay off, or maybe it will just teach you to not do whatever it was a second time.

Anyway, to move back to the blog: I’m so excited by all of the possibilities ahead. I have lots of things planned that I just can’t wait to get started on and share with you. This blog is my outlet and I am so grateful that people enjoy it. Thank you for reading, supporting and following me. Here’s to many more years ahead!

London, Part One

{The incredible view from my hotel room at night}

I really don’t want to be one of those people who posts hundreds of meaningless travel photos on the internet, but London is just too pretty not to share a couple. I’ve only been here for two days and I’m already falling in love – with the architecture, the food, the weather, the accents…so, without further ado, here are a couple of pictures from my trip so far.

What to Do

whattodo_vol1

Recipe/Image/Album

Maybe it’s just me, but oftentimes I find myself getting into a rut. I’ll start spending all of my free time the same way, start eating the same things every day, start listening to the same playlist over and over…and then, one day, I’ll go to brunch, or spend time with friends, or do something to break the rut – and I’m reminded how important it is to do new, fun things. In that spirit, I’m starting a new segment on the blog that’ll pop up every now and again, called “what to do”. It’ll highlight a few of my favorite recent activities and items, in categories like “make this,” “see this,” and “do this.” Let me know what you think!

P.S. For those of you who haven’t heard – I’m in the UK for the next two weeks, so be sure to follow me on Instagram for lots of pictures of my adventures there!
