Sweater

Casual: Cords/Shoes/Cuff

Chic: Skirt/Heels/Clutch

This season, embellished sweaters and sweatshirts were all over the place, and for good reason – besides being amazingly comfortable, they’re remarkably versatile. In the casual outfit, the sweater acts like a basic, paired with charcoal cords, with shiny burgundy oxfords and a tortoiseshell cuff to add a little low-key elegance. In the second look, a full, knee-length skirt makes the sweater a little dressy but lets it remain the focus of the outfit, while glittery heels and a metallic clutch play up the embellishments on the sweater.

Sadly, summer seems to be going by quickly, and I’m determined to make my summer wardrobe work through mid-September. Enter the chambray shirt: the  über-comfortable, wear anywhere with anything piece that we all have – not to mention the ultimate transition piece (I really do wear mine year-round). It’s already a bit chilly here on the East Coast, so I’m expecting my favorite shirt to pop up in a lot of upcoming outfits. Here, I’ve styled it two different ways that are summery, but have you covered if there’s a nip in the air. For the casual look, I paired it with white jeans (the quintessential summer staple), a bright statement necklace, and simple embellished sandals for an easy but polished outfit. For the chic look, I treated the chambray top like a classic button-down, and paired it with a fun-meets-serious pencil skirt, structured red heels for a pop of color, and some delicate gold rings.

Casual: Top/Shoes/Cigar Ring/Snake Ring

Chic: Top/Shoes/Necklace

So I actually bought these pants. In my defense, they were (and still are) $20 on clearance and I was already ordering a few things from Urban Outfitters. And they got me free shipping. (I’ve since gotten them in the mail, and oh my goodness are they ever comfortable. Buy them.) In the days of trying them on repeatedly and staring at them for long periods of time (what? I totally don’t do that in my free time), I’ve compiled a mental list of things I could wear with them: a black peplum, a chambray shirt, a burgundy sweater (I didn’t include that because I don’t want to start posting fall stuff just quite yet) – basically anything neutral and relatively plain. I put together my two favorite looks, above. For the casual outfit, I added some burgundy slippers and statement rings for color variation and a little glitz. For the chic outfit, I decided a leather peplum feels a little dressier than your average poly-blend, added some seriously cool shoes and a bold-but-not-overpowering necklace. Which look do you prefer? How would you wear camo jeans? (If you have a pair, or anything in camouflage for that matter, I’d love to hear how you wear it!)

Outfit One: Target Dress/Madewell Top/Forever 21 Flats/Madewell Necklace

Outfit Two: Target Dress/J. Crew Necklace/Michael Antonio Pumps/Kate Spade Clutch

Welcome to a new segment on sarah kate style: Double Take. I’ll start with a basic (or not-so-basic) piece, and show you two ways to style it – casual (fit for a day out museum hopping, a low-key party, the like) and chic (for dinner out and formal events).

First up is the LBD – just about the most classic piece you can buy next to a good pair of black pumps, the little black dress can take you just about anywhere. While it’s generally associated with black tie occasions, if the dress is right, you can pair it with more laid-back pieces for a casual but still put-together look. Just think of it as a body suit with a skirt. This one also features side cutouts and a no-fuss fabric which give it a cool, slightly edgy vibe. For the first outfit, striped flats and a denim shirt tied at the waist make for a nautical inspired look. The bright colored, statement-making accessories in the second outfit make the look modern and graphic.
