Bright Maxi Dress

maxi dress 7 edited

H&M Dress // Vintage clutch // Steve Madden sandals // kate spade ring

Like last week, this is another sort-of boring/simple outfit, but that’s because I think this dress looks pretty good on its own. I tend not to wear a bunch of jangly bracelets or layers of necklaces, instead sticking to the statement accessory here and there and wearing clothes that speak for themselves (yikes that sounds cheesy) – like patterned pants, a graphic tee, or, in this case, a bright orange maxi dress. Hooray for comfort and ease!

(Also – some of the pictures may make me look it, but I promise you I’m not translucent.)

What I’d Wear When

what i'd wear when

Dress // Heels // Earrings // Clutch

I really love theater. Just about any kind of play or musical will do, but since I’m a total nerd, Shakespeare is my favorite. It helps that the members of my favorite local troop are really friendly and sing thematically-appropriate modern songs, plus they have an awesome new theater. But that aside, I love heading out to see a play. It’s more engaging than a movie, and a little more intellectual, and it’s the perfect escape on a warm summer night. It’s an event that lends itself well to being paired with a relaxed dinner, too, and it’s the perfect time to dress up just a little – a cute dress and some shiny heels do the trick.

Floral Shorts

New York and Company shirt | New York and Company shorts (similar options here, here and here) | Birkenstock sandals | Vintage necklace | Target purse

Shorts are not my friend (generally speaking). I don’t love my legs, but Baltimore’s crazy-humid, crazy-hot summers don’t allow for pants. Perhaps it’s just me, but the majority of shorts I run across are teeny tiny and tight. But last year I was determined, and stopped in NY&Co after finding my favorite pair of white jeans there. I walked out with two pairs that are not only comfortable and a decent length but cute, and this is one. The shirt is a fun story too – I just grabbed it to try on shorts with, expecting to hate it – but I ended up loving it and ever since, I’ve worn it constantly, year-round. It’s kind of a plain outfit, but it was insanely humid this past weekend and I couldn’t imagine wearing something more complicated.

(By the way, that picture in the background is a part of The Walters Art Museum’s Off The Wall open-air exhibit. The picture is actually pretty weird, so I’m giving you a link to the Wikipedia article on it. Everything in the bottom left corner is bizarre and hysterical.)

Spring Picks

Spring fashion and I have a bit of a rocky relationship. I probably expect too much of it. When it comes to fall, I have a really clear vision of what I like to wear – slightly edgy, a palette of neutrals and a variety of textures (leather, faux fur, wool…). But spring – I feel like there are lots of routes to go. Preppy. Minimalistic. Bohemian. Little white dresses. And because I’ve never really taken the time to figure out what it is I like – because I’m spending all my time outside thawing from winter – my wardrobe tends to be a weird conglomeration of a bunch of stuff that at one point or another I decided I liked. And now I’m getting really excited about spring (I always do once Christmas is over) so I plan on taking advantage of the Zara sale to spruce up my wardrobe for the coming season. And I’m finally gaining a sense of what I like: patterns, a mix of brights, pastels, and black and white. And polka dots. I’m really feeling polka dots for spring.

Are you excited for spring yet? (Or is it just me? Probably.)

Also – you’ve probably noticed that sarah kate style has a brand new look – I’d love to hear what you think!

Fall Fashion

It may be the middle of summer, but I’ve already started refreshing my fall wardrobe. While I love breezy striped tops and neon accessories, there’s something about fall fashion that makes my heart beat a little faster – the rich colors, the luxurious textures, the ease and comfort of layers. My style tends to change season to season: feminine and a little preppy in the spring and summer, minimalist and edgy in the fall and winter. I always get sucked into the trap of looking for clothes I want for the next season, and this year is no exception. I started my search with the Zara sale (one of my favorite times of year) and moved on to H&M (in all honesty, those are the two stores I shop at the most). Above are the things currently in my shopping carts, and the items I’ve already purchased for the coming season.
