Life Lately

This week has been pretty relaxed. It’s felt so nice getting back into blogging, and I intend to keep up with posting regularly – I’m feeling so inspired lately. Last weekend was my first farmer’s market visit of the year (it’s been closed the past two weeks for reasons you probably saw on the news) and though the weather is a little more summery than I’d like (ehem, raging thunderstorms and 80% humidity), I’m getting back into my spring/summer rhythm and it’s making me feel so happy. I’ve also gotten back in touch with the lovely Nathalie, whose newly redone blog you should all totally check out. Here are some of the highlights from my life lately – have a great weekend!

What I’d Wear When

what i'd wear when

Dress // Heels // Earrings // Clutch

I really love theater. Just about any kind of play or musical will do, but since I’m a total nerd, Shakespeare is my favorite. It helps that the members of my favorite local troop are really friendly and sing thematically-appropriate modern songs, plus they have an awesome new theater. But that aside, I love heading out to see a play. It’s more engaging than a movie, and a little more intellectual, and it’s the perfect escape on a warm summer night. It’s an event that lends itself well to being paired with a relaxed dinner, too, and it’s the perfect time to dress up just a little – a cute dress and some shiny heels do the trick.

Floral Shorts

New York and Company shirt | New York and Company shorts (similar options here, here and here) | Birkenstock sandals | Vintage necklace | Target purse

Shorts are not my friend (generally speaking). I don’t love my legs, but Baltimore’s crazy-humid, crazy-hot summers don’t allow for pants. Perhaps it’s just me, but the majority of shorts I run across are teeny tiny and tight. But last year I was determined, and stopped in NY&Co after finding my favorite pair of white jeans there. I walked out with two pairs that are not only comfortable and a decent length but cute, and this is one. The shirt is a fun story too – I just grabbed it to try on shorts with, expecting to hate it – but I ended up loving it and ever since, I’ve worn it constantly, year-round. It’s kind of a plain outfit, but it was insanely humid this past weekend and I couldn’t imagine wearing something more complicated.

(By the way, that picture in the background is a part of The Walters Art Museum’s Off The Wall open-air exhibit. The picture is actually pretty weird, so I’m giving you a link to the Wikipedia article on it. Everything in the bottom left corner is bizarre and hysterical.)

Chocolate Pistachio Biscotti

biscotti 7 lead

I think biscottis are kind of underrated. They seem simple, but dipping them in chocolate makes them an indulgent companion to a cup of coffee. I always love the idea of having one at breakfast – because what’s better than a cookie for breakfast? (and a chocolate-dipped one at that?). They’re simple enough to make, and you can mix in pretty much whatever you want. I went for pistachios and used this recipe as a base – perhaps it’s because I doubled it, or maybe the eggs I used were abnormally large, but I had to add in about an extra 1/2 cup of flour so it wasn’t a total sticky disaster. That being said, it’s hard to mess these up, especially since you cook them twice. And, if all else fails, coat them in chocolate.

Spring Jewelry Update

jewelry

Minimalist Neutral: 1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6 // 7 // 8 // 9
Neon Statement: 1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6 // 7

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you know I’m a little obsessed with statement jewelry…actually any jewelry (but who isn’t?). Lately though I’ve been a little torn between my love for bold pieces and more delicate, streamlined styles. I think they both work so well for spring, since a statement necklace can liven up a basic dress (as it did in this post) but simple gold pieces are unfussy and go with everything in my spring wardrobe. I’m totally in love with these marble and gold earrings, but I think this option strikes the perfect balance between simple + architectural and bold neon.

How about you? Which do you prefer?
